Well, there's no way that you could call this anti-climactic. If anything it was a little too climactic. Overall I felt satisfied with the ending, some of it was well telegraphed, and some of it was a HUGE surprise. But it was a good ending, a good story and a great villain.
SPOILER ALERT: Bugger off if you don't want to know before seeing.
I liked the use of Martha's Mum, still an idiot - but at least consistently so. I hate when characters are redeemed unrealistically for the sake of another characters arc. So she remained a stupid bitch right to the end and that was good. Mr Jones and Tish seemed unnecessary, in the way and really only there to provide motivation. The end for Martha was telegraphed in the first few minutes, it was pretty obvious that Dr Tom was going to be her man and she would leave for him (kind of anyway).
The changes in Mrs Saxon were immediately apparent and you just know she was going to turn, be mental or something else as a fly in the Master's ointment. Not sure why she was even kept alive, the Master had no need of her and classed her as a stupid ape with the rest of Humanity. Captain Jack seemed superfluous - but I guess he just needed closure from the Doctor. Face of Boe? Didn't see it coming and loved the tidy up connection.
The Doctor vs The Master. I thought that he was going to get shot by Clive Jones, he had no other purpose, but it was pretty obvious why the gun fell to the floor and was not taken away. It would have made a bloody brilliant season 4 if the Master was in the TARDIS with the Doctor constantly fighting for control and looking for opportunities to escape/turn the tables. But that remains a geek-boy fantasy for now. I figure it's not the last of the Master, pretty obvious with the ring epilogue piece, but I hope that's not all we see of Simm. As the Mad Master in the first half he was transcendentally insane and I still love that look. It was a shame that the "magic" psychic business was far too easily passed off for power, but at least there was some tech in it with the Archangel.
I'm glad Martha left, and the "Just get out" speech was pitch perfect for her ludicrous crush and for once was relevant and worked perfectly not just for her but for the Doctor as well. I knew from the first minute she was leaving, not because of the rumours, but because of the vet and the battle-hardened look. We've seen this before, but this was very well done here.
The Titanic is next, I think he was there before in the Chase? Not sure, but I'm sure the Xmas special "Voyage of the Damned" will be a good one. Season 3 got a whole lot better in the second half, even if the first lot were pants. I feared the worst after the Shakespeare ep, and was heartbroken with the Dalek Pantomime, but in the end it was a great save and the conclusion was Masterful.
Love your work.
