This week we discover that this is something worse that being hunted by Weeping Angels, it's that timey-whimy cracks in the wall will wipe you from existence... and that's just a fraction of what was happening in what I'd say is the most intense episode of Doctor Who I have ever watched.
The episode started off nicely from last weeks cliff-hanger with a little bit of defying gravity, and really that can be applied to most of what follows, as at a viewer do you feel that your feet touch the ground as the Weeping Angels begin to close in on The Doctor, Amy, River Song and our little band of militant clergy. Very quickly this could have turned into a stone-cold copy of Aliens, with the band of heroes being slowly picked off and the usual confrontation between The Doctor and the bad guys and then closing theme... well in most simple terms it was, but you'd have never guessed the journey that you'd take to get there.
This two part episode has really given Matt Smith the closing statement in the ongoing argument; is he a suitable Doctor Who... damn straight, he's one of the best. In fact I'd say he has even trumped David Tennant i some of his finer moments, not quite Chris Eccleston yet though. He has shown us the true character of this incarnation of The Doctor, witty, smart, socially inept, quick to anger, passionate, compassionate and importantly willing to learn. But it's not really just the Matt Smith show, it's also fast becoming the Karen Gillan show as she moves Amy Pond along from just being wide eyed to someone with a lot more passion and humanity than we have ever seen in a that supporting role. Also finally Alex Kingston got to let more of the enigmatic River Song out to play and it was brilliant, could possibly be a bit tiresome if she was in too many more episodes though.
There's going to comments for weeks on who did River Song kill and what exactly is her relationship with The Doctor, it's starting to become less clear the more we learn. This week we learn she knows about how her past interacts with the future and possibly this present is her future.... see it's all getting a bit timey-whimy again and I really want to know.
However all the comments on River Song will pale in comparison to the brazen act of Amy attempting to have The Doctor right here, right now. Understandable, she's had a bad run in with Weeping Angels and had squaddie/parsons vanish from their existence and the reality is she's still running from that white dress.
I liked:
"I made him say comfy chairs"
Amy's count-down, one of many creepy moments
Really it's all about the gravity of the situation
The perplexing back-story of River Song and The Doctor
I disliked:
Needed more Angel Bob
The perplexing back-story of River Song and The Doctor
I need to be convinced:
My current interest in the River Song back-story is not going to end in a big smelly pile of disappointment
Next week we have Vampires in Venice and somehow I'm not sure taking Rory to Venice will make Amy's thoughts/doubts/needs go away, but my last thought for now is this, who is re-writing time? The Daleks? The Cyber-Men (note the Cyber-King reference), The Master? The Time-Lords themselves?
