Amy's Choice - Gaz

Amy's Choice... yes, I'd have to agree!

Okay, that was really a cheap shot and I'll take the rap for that one 'guv. Sorry, I have been watching the latest series of Ashes To Ashes alongside Doctor Who and occasionally they merge in my mind, time travel accents from the north and such like... meanwhile, this weeks episode... I thought it was a bit confusing at times, but kinda brill!

This episode started off a great look at Upper Leadworth, Rory's god-awful pony tail, creepy peepy old folk and the birds... always the birds. Then we have red flashing lights and things started to look a bit odd and it became a bit timey-whimey.

As the episode progresses, we learn "to never use force, you'll just embarrass yourself" and when things go wrong the "on coming storm" comes apart and should be opening a tawdry quirk shop... oh and the story is being told in two worlds, with two oncoming dangers and it'll be down to Amy to solve.

Initially I was going to say that the episode belongs to Amy, however on thought I think it really belongs to the Dream Lord (Toby Jones), who revels in tormenting Rory and Amy, however it's The Doctor who feels the focus of his venom. It's a brilliant play on how our hero could easily be rather nasty, petty and downright cruel. He helps drive along what is one of the most claustrophobic episodes since Blink. Some would say it was Midnight when The Doctor was trapped on the space tour bus, bit really it was just too shouty rather than claustrophobic.

I liked that Amy had to chose the outcome and that the Dream Lords offer pointed to something that's been set in stone since the re-launch of Doctor Who, the fate of his companions is not his fate and very rarely do they get a chance to choose for themselves, as Amy says, "what is the point of you?".

I liked:
The Dream Lord, despite all the obvious clues, but is that not the point?
Amy keeps delivering a key points
The claustrophobic feel of this episode
It was funny

I disliked:
The stupid psychic beans theory... awful
Pensioners containing one-eyed aliens, really! What purpose did they serve? The pensioners by themselves were just creepy enough

I need to be convinced:
There's something special about Rory and Amy we are yet to learn

Next week it's the return of the Silurians.
